The very rare Rolex Submariner Big Crown Four Liner Dial Watch REF. 6538, made in 1957, will be put up for auction by an anonymous collector on November 18th at the Morton Subastas Jewelery and Watches Auction. This lot, number 335, has a low estimate of 750,000 MXN. An item of high historical and collectible importance, this watch also has a cinematic reference that makes it doubly legendary, as it is linked to the model used by Agent 007 in the movie “Dr. No” from 1962.

There are several stories surrounding this legendary Rolex; one of them tells how the producer Albert R. Broccoli, a faithful client of the brand, loaned his watch to Sean Connery for the movie, thus becoming the iconic watch of cinema’s most famous agent.

The Submariner model was created at a time when diving was extremely popular. The idea of creating a submersible watch came from René Paul, who at the time was the director of Rolex. An avid diver, Paul persuaded Hans Wilsdorf, president of the company, to make a specific model for divers. The Submariner, therefore, is considered to be the most famous sports watch in history. The Ref. 6538 stopped being produced in 1959, which is one of many reasons that this piece, although missing the bezel, is of such high importance.
The auction will take place on November 18th at 5:00 pm at Morton’s auction room and online on Bidsquare.
