Sight height 30 in width 25 in. Framed height 37 in, width 31.5 in. A rare study in oil of a Florida landscape. Artist Emile Gruppe was an American plein air landscape and seascape painter of oils on canvas; Gruppe is best known for his variety of impressionistic landscapes. His modern style was largely inherited from the French Impressionist Monet. Artist Emile Gruppe adopted a Post-Impressionist style, with expressive, edged brushstrokes that lend a touch of realism to his work. His compositions emphasized color and value, even with monochromatic winter scenes. Much of Emile Gruppe artwork for sale includes vibrant pastels and ochers, in particular, to highlight structural elements in his foregrounds. From 1940 to 1970, he ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck, on Smith Cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Gruppe paintings are often seen in major auction houses and galleries. He founded the Gloucester School of Painting from his home base in Massachusetts, where he painted some of his most enduring scenes of boats and harbors. Emile Albert Gruppe paintings also include wintry scenes in Vermont and farmlands around the Woodstock, New York area.
