Very rare pair of earliest style US Navy Pilot's wings, with silver shield and gilt wings with no berries, hand engraved detail on feathers, longer shaft to anchor, pin backed sterling, scratch engraved some time ago with number "7." This is the Naval Aviator's number for Godfrey de Courcelles, Chevalier, WHo Was the father of our carrier based Naval Aviation. He was an Annapolis graduate, who then got his Pilot's license, and commanded the US Navy Flying Boat station at Dunquerque in France during World War I. After the War he helped develop the first ship=borne catapults for launching aircraft, becoming the first man to be so launched and survive. He later became the first Pilot to land on our first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley. He died in a flying accident soon thereafter.
These wings were in this collection, but the connection to Chevalier was only discovered by our staff on examination. We have discovered photos of Chevalier, including one in uniform, possibly wearing this exact wing. Even were these wings not connected to Chevalier, they would be of exceptional rarity, scarcer than comparable Army Air Corps wings.
