Framed William Coulter (1849-1936) oil on canvas, "River of Molten Rock, Hawaii". Signed lower right, "W.A. Coulter / S.F." Handwritten on frame verso, "Billows Roll". Dimensions: (canvas) 16"h x 24"w; (framed) 21.5"h x 29.5"w. Coulter was born in Ireland but moved to San Francisco in 1869 where he worked as a sailmaker in addition to his art. In 1882 was his first of many visits to Hawaii. One of his most important commissions was a series of five mural panels for the Merchants Exchange Building in San Francisco. Provenance: Captain Weber, Stockton, CA thence by famiy descent. Exhibitions: "Palette and Pen in King Kalakaua'a Kingdom", San Francsico, 1913 Kilohana Art League, King Bros Art Supply Store, Honolulu.
