Terrific Power Kachina, "Chowilawu" by Neil David Sr.. Dimensions: 7"h. Provenance: Purchased on Ebay from David Parker, Monroe, UT. $290.80. 12/09/14.
This Kachina is hand carved and painted on cottonwood root by renown artist, Neil David Sr. Artist signature is written on underside of right foot. It is decorated with feathers and its original cotton hanging string. Few Hopi carvers will make this doll, making it very rare. A Mennonite missionary convinced a carver to make a doll of this Kachina for which they were castigated by the Oraibi priests. This Kachina is never seen in public but only appears in initiations into the Powamu fraternity.
