- Lot Description
Superb Ames, Chicopee, Mass. 1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword, by descent in the family carried by Colonel C.G. Hawley, 117th Ohio Volunteers, who served in the Army of the Cumberland, and commanded a brigade therein. The sword is in very good condition, having a beautifully etched blade that retains most of its original polish, with some minor stains, and a few tiny pits where the blade rested in the scabbard. The hilt is beautiful, and it retains the original sword knot, in good condition. The grip has most of its original sharkskin, but is missing all but a small strand of the wire, and does show minor wear. It has been stained by polish in the past. The sword is in its steel brass mounted scabbard, which is pitted on the steel, but retains its blue finish. There is a dent above the drag.
This is the sword Colonel Hawley carried during the War.

Condition
As described. The sword is in very good condition, but would benefit from having the old polish residue removed, and the grip wire replaced. Witherells strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
