Peter Vanden Berge (Netherlands/Sacramento, b. 1935) ceramic stoppered pot bearing animal figure on body and figural "head" stopper. Appears to be unsigned. Overall dimensions 18"h x 7.5"w. Vanden Berge was born in the Hague but moved to California in 1950 and taught at Sacramento State University. Influenced by Modigliani and Giacometti, he is best known for his elongated "heads" bearing a rough texture and reminiscent of tribal pieces. Working under Robert Arneson he was part of the California Funk Art movement. His works have been widely exhibited including the Smithsonian, Louvre and Whitney Museums.
