The original German letter to the commander of American troops in Bastogne, General Anthony McAuliffe, detailing the German numerical superiority to the Americans, and the hopelessness of the American situation, and offering to accept the American surrender. To this offer, General McAuliffe famously replied, "Nuts."
This is quite simply the most significant document to survive from the European field of combat after the D-Day landings.
This is the original document sent to General McAuliffe, and kept by him until his death, and then passed to his daughter, who is the consignor. The letter is typewritten on simple paper, and the typewritten signature is Der deutsche Befehlshaber, which translates as "The German Commander." It was clearly written on a German typewriter, and by a native German speaker.
