George Longfish (Seneca/Tuscorora) was was born in Ohsweken, a village on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve in Ontario, Canada. He received his M.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and, in 1972, founded and directed the graduate program in American Indian Arts at the University of Montana. Two years later, he joined the faculty of the Native American Studies Department at the University of California in Davis, becoming director of the C.N. Gorman Museum.
