Framed John McQuarrie (California, 1871-1944) working artist's palette for his mural for the Sacramento Train Depot. The artist proof is affixed to heavy paper on cardboard. In the margins of the cardboard is handwritten in pencil future color choices for various parts of the mural. The mural was unveiled August 22, 1931. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, public murals gained in popularity and visibility partly due to the various World's Fairs and Expositions as well as the WPA projects. McQuarrie was commissioned for the east wall of the Sacramento Valley Station. He chose to depict the groundbreaking ceremony on January 8, 1863 in Sacramento for the First Transcontinental Railroad. McQuarrie's most famous mural may be the Driving of the Golden Spike in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dimensions: 7.25"h x 29.5"w; (framed) 14.25" x 36.5"w.
