Hopi Mud Head Kachina, "Koyemsi" by unknown artist. Dimensions (overall): 8"h. Provenance: Purchased on Ebay. IPSC Akron, OH. $40. 01/19/12.Ì_
Hand carved hand painted. Title written on underside of base. This Mud Head is believed to be an older version called Tachukti because of the positions of the mud balls on the head. In Hopi folklore the first Koyemsi incestuously fathered nine children with his sister. Later, in remorse, the father beat himself and rolled in mud until mud balls covered his head and all Koyemsi offspring since then resembled their father. They are banned from becoming Kachinas and play secondary roles in ceremonies.Ì_
