Hopi Assassin Fly Kachina, "Kokopala" by Delbert Phillips. Dimensions (overall): 8"h. Provenance: Purchased on Ebay from Lenny Bickford, Windham, NH. $69.99. 08/09/15. Previously owned by collector, Rich Hacker, who sold it in 2012.Ì_
Beautifully hand-carved and painted, this Kokopala is truly unique. With a piece of cottonwood root that would seem unusable to most carvers, Phillips shows true ingenuity and talent by turning a fault into an unexpected and surprising gift. He creates a lovely bas relief depicting a Hopi village and foliage inside the knot of the wood, and then continues this subtractive sculptural language around the back in depicting clouds being brought by the music of Kokopala himself. Artist signature on underside of base.Ì_
Delbert Phillips is the son and pupil of prize winning carver Bradford Phillips. With this doll he shows both mastery of craft and a keen talent for storytelling.Ì_
