This is a large and early portrait of :Hernando Cortes de Monroy, Marquis of Oaxaca," Governor of New Spain, and conqueror of the Aztecs. The portrait shows Cortez in black armor with gilded decoration, as he would have appeared as the Governor General of New Spain, after the Conquest. His coat of arms appear in the upper left corner. The painting measures 39 by 46 1/2 inches, and has a gold painted frame, also of some antiquity. The painting is in the style of El Greco. It is quite dirty, with some minor surface scuffs and scratches, but is in very good condition. The painting is very well executed, especially the armor, which is accurately rendered.
