General Anthony McAuliffe sterling silver presentation pitcher bearing extensive repousse floral decoration with scenes of Bastogne, engraved, "Presented to the hero of Bastogne, Maj. Genl. Anthony C. McAuliffe as a token of esteem by his friends in the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland, Theodore P. McHeldin, Mayor and Herbert R. O'Conor, Governor, June 24, 1945." Marked on base, S.Kirk & Son Co./925/1000/184. Bastogne was one of the battles comprising the Battle of the Bulge, December 16, 1944 - January 25, 1945. It was during the battle for Bastogne that Gen. McAuliffe made his famous, "nuts" replay to the German Army's offer to accept the Allies' surrender. The presentation ceremony is described in the Baltimore Sun, June 25, 1945 on page 18. Gen McAuliffe was the principal speaker at a memorial concert to commemorate the Baltimore men and women who served in the War. To the 10,000 people attending, McAuliffe denied he was a hero instead saying he was, "merely acting as spokesman for those Americans, living and dead, who comprised the units which defended that key road center so heroically." "Governor O'Coner ...presented him a large silver pitcher." 10"h. 22.9 ozt. Provenance: Estate of General Anthony McAuliffe thence by family descent.
