General Anthony McAuliffe scrapbook and photo album. Along with dozens of newspapers and magazine clippings relating to Bastogne and McAuliffe are several very interesting wartime photos, showing McAuliffe at Innsbruck, Austria addressing new replacements for the 103rd Infantry division. There is a post war photograph of McAuliffe in full dress with Admiral William F. "Bull" Halsey and General Maxwell Taylor, also in full dress. There is a note on State of New York stationary to McAuliffe from and signed by Governor Nelson A Rockefeller dated 1959; an "Honorary citizen" identification card for General McAuliffe from the city of Bastogne, presented in 1950; a beautiful letter in French from a Belgian family from Bastogne recalling the death of their sister during the siege and noting McAuliffe's kindness and compassion towards them during the siege. Finally, among the clippings is the card of General of Panzertruppe Hasso von Manteuffel, whose troops opposed McAullife's at Bastogne. General Anthony McAuliffe was one of the Commanding officers at the Battle of the Bulge, Bastogne during World War II. He famously responded, "Nuts" to the German Army's offer to accept the Allies' surrender. Overall: 14.25" x 12". Provenance: Estate of General Anthony McAuliffe thence by family descent.
