A superb French light cavalry officer's saber of the Republican era, having been carried by Jacques Bercioux, Commissaire de l'Armee du Rhin 1n the 1790's. It has a pommel in the style known as "a l'Allemand," or "coffin" style, and is superbly decorated. The brass hilt, although simple in design, is beautifully chased with military trophies, including a trumpet and drum, and the knuckle-bow has a large Republican fasces on it. The grip is excellent, retaining all of its leather and wire. The scabbard has three gilt brass mounts, all decorated in a repousse manner, with trophies of arms, and Greek style helmet repeated on the top and bottom mounts. The leather of the scabbard is in remarkable condition, showing minor wear to its finish. The blade has blue and gold decoration, including a Hussar wearing a mirleton, on a rearing horse. The blue and gold are almost entirely present, and the bright section of the blade is excellent, with a tiny amount of staining right at the point. There is no visible maker's mark, but this is almost certainly the product of one of the very finest of French makers. Overall length 39 inches. Blade is 33 inches long.
Note: the oil portrait of Commissaire Bercioux, by German artist Johann-Friedrich Dryander is also for sale in this auction. They have been preserved together in the family for over 200 years. This is their first time ever on the market.

Excellent overall. The blade has a thick coat of grease or oil that has helped preserve it, but has become rather sticky with age.
