Duke's Cigarette Cards "A Short History of..." Series of Union and Confederate Civil War Generals Series of miniature (cigarette card size) polychrome booklets dating from 1888. This lot includes 40 out of the original set of 50 cards that were issued and is comprised of: Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Philip Sheridan, P. G. T. Beauregard, George B. McClellan, A. P. Hill, Nathaniel Lyon, Braxton Bragg, Leonidas Polk, Joseph E. Johnston, T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Richard S. Ewell, Nathaniel P. Banks, Don Carlos Buell, John Sedgwick, Oliver Otis Howard, Franz Sigel, J. B. Magruder, John A. Logan, A. E. Burnside, Joseph Hooker, George Meade, George Pickett, J. E. B. Stuart, Winfield Scott, Wade Hampton III, John B. Hood, John Hunt Morgan, William S. Rosecrans, Albert Sidney Johnston, Joseph J. McDowell, Andrew Hull Foote, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Winfield Scott Hancock, John C. Pemberton, John C. Breckinridge, Benjamin Butler, Quincy Adams Gilmore, John Brown Gordon, and Jubal Early. These booklets are ungraded. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $25.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
All 40 books contain the original 16 pages of text they were issued with and most books are totally intact. The books of Andrew Hull Foote, T. J. "Stonewall" Jackson," and are broken at the spine with the front and back pages disconnected from the rest of the text. The cover page for Nathaniel P. Banks is broken at the bottom where the generals name should be. All other books are intact and overall are in fairly good condition. There is some light surface damage and the edges are worn, but the colors are bright and all the text is legible. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
