- Lot Description
45 Civil War letters, and a number of envelopes written by Charles Backster, also known as Baxter, of the 27th New Jersey Volunteers, to his parents and sister from 1861-1865. These detail the raising of the regiment, movements of the regiment as it joined the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac, vidette duty, and his presence at the battle of Fredericksburg, where the regiment was held in reserve during the assault on Marye's Heights. The letters continue to 1865, with many interesting details. Additionally, there are many later letters, some from Baxter, but others continuing to the end of World War II, detailing service, deaths, and more. This is a truly remarkable family archive, including service in three wars.

Condition
Generally VG+. Some of Baxter's letters are in pencil, and are difficult to read, bust most are in pen, and are quite clear. Witherells strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
