Ames Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Presentation sword to Colonel C.G. Hawley of the 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Feb. 7, 1863.
This is a very fine and rare Ames made presentation sword with steel scabbard with heavy bronze mounts of a very ornate pattern, and the presentation inscription engraved on the steel of the scabbard between the top two mounts: Presented to Col. C.G. Hawley, by the Officers of the 117th Regt. O.V.I.Feb.7, 1863." The hilt is the 1850 staff and field pattern hilt, but far more ornate than usual, with a lot of hand engraved detail. The blade is Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass., and is beautifully acid etched for 2/3 of its 32 1/2 inches. The grip is sharkskin. The blued steel scabbard is missing the drag. The sword overall is 38 3/4 inches long.
Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $ 62.00 plus 1.5% replacement and insurance. Please note we do not accept credit cards.
The sword is missing its drag, and the grip is dried and missing its gilt wire binding. The grip has been stained, probably by silver polish. The sword retains its original sword knot. The drag has been replaced with a copper fitting. The blade is a little dirty, but will clean easily. The scabbard has light rust on the steel, and polish residue. It may be missing its throat, but swords like this frequently didn't have separate throats.
