Chief Kachina, "Wuwuyomo" by Henry Shelton. Dimensions (overall): 13"h. Provenance: Purchased on Ebay from James Dickinson, Medina, NY. $575. 10/29/14.
This Kachina is hand carved and painted by renown master carver, Henry Shelton. He is meticulously painted with symbolic and decorative elements. He wears yarn garters on his legs and striped feathers and cotton on his headdress. Included is the original cotton hanging string though he has been placed on a base. The artists signature is on the underside of the base.
Wuwuyoma are known as "old men kachinas" because they are so ancient and they represent the power of knowledge. They are a master of ceremonies and lead Manas into the villages but stop along the processional route to sing, an important step to insure the growth of crops.
