Framed handwritten letter by Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), Treasury Department, November 27, 1794 to William Ellery Esquire, Collector of Newport. "Sir, I have to request, that you will retain sufficient funds in your hands......which will become due in your District......given for that purpose. I request that you will immediately furnish me with an estimate of the sum which will be required, in order that I may regulate future draughts of the Treasurer accordingly. I am with consideration, Sir, Your most obedient servant, A. Hamilton." Dimensions: 9.75"h x 8"w; (overall) 24.25"h x 13.75"w. Provenance: Original receipt, Charles Hamilton's Autographs, New York, New York, 1963 with COA from same store affixed verso. Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804) was one of the United States' Founding Fathers. He was the founder of the U.S. financial system, the Federalist Party, the U.S. Coast Guard and the N.Y. Post newspaper. He served as the first United States Secretary of the Treasury. He died during a duel with Aaron Burr. William Ellery (1727-1820) was born in Newport Rhode Island and was one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence as a representative from Rhode Island. President Washington appointed him Collector of Customs for the Newport District in 1790, a position he held until his death.
