A Guan Dao or Guandao, Chinese, but similar to a Japanese Naginata. the blade is over 2 feet long, sword shaped, and has a tsuba. The tang is quite long, and you can see that it runs well down the pole through a small slot left by a missing piece of wood. There are exceptional brass mounts on the pole, including two pierced mounts of grat delicacy and craftsmanship. The tsuba also displays wonderful craftsmanship. The blade is mostly single edged, but is double edged for the 18 inches closest to the point, except for the very point, which is reinforced for piercing armor. The haft is very solid, and has brass mounts along its length. There is a wooden sheath, mounted in brass. Overall length: 80 inches.
This is an exceptional pole arm, probably dating to the 1700's.

There is a small piece missing from the haft, though which you can see the blade's tang. The blade shows some black staining, consistent with its age. It is straight, and very well made. The tsuba is loose. Witherells strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
