- Lot Description
4 Japanese World War II era flags, as carried by many Japanese soldiers and sailors, 2 of them extensively signed by comrades and families:
1. A larger (40 x 34 inches in frame) flag, framed in what is almost a shadow box. It has a great many signatures, and apparent inscriptions that have yet to be translated. Some of the signatures are faded, but most are quite clear. The white of the flag is slightly yellowed, bust the red is still very bright, and overall condition is very good plus.
2. A slightly smaller flag (35 x 31 1/2 inches in frame)with inscriptions that have been translated, linking it to Shigaru Nakamura, an Army pilot who flew in the Okinawa Campaign. Edges of flag are slightly brown, white field is yellowed, but no damage whatsoever. Very good plus condition.
3. A Japanese Naval ensign, in excellent condition, with leather reinforcements to the hoist, (40 x 31 inches in frame)
4. A smaller, strictly personal sized Japanese Naval ensign (18 by 22 inches in the frame) in faded, but very good condition, with a few minor spots.

As described. Some of the frames have minor dents, but all are quite sturdy, and the glass is very good. Witherells strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
