An American Silver Tankard, mark of Bartholomew Le Roux, New York, 1663-1713, tapered cylindrical body, the foot applied with a wire & leaf border, the hinged flat-domed cover with later engraving of the Van Rensselaer Family Coat of Arms, with scroll thumb piece, flat rim serrated at front and rear edges, the scroll handle applied at the grip with a lion couchant and with a cast cherub's head terminal. 8" tall, 38.5 TO. The front of the body was spouted, likely in the 19th century and has been restored, with the Rensselaer Family Coat of Arms repeating on the front of the body. The makers mark appears twice under base. This tankard descended in the family of Sarah Drexel Fell Van Rensellaer. Alexander Van Rensselaer (1850-1933), married Sarah Drexel Fell (1860-1929), the youngest daughter of A.J. Drexel, at Camp Hill Hall, Fort Washington, 1898; to her daughter Mae Drexel Fell (1884-1948), from Sarah Drexel's previous marriage to John Ruckman Fell (1858-1895); to her daughter Minnie; and thence by descent to present owner. Condition Report: A scientific analysis of the tankard ( determined it was spouted (possibly in the nineteenth century), and the spout then removed and the resulting void filled with an insert. The engraving on the barrel goes over this repair, and so this suggests a late nineteenth or early twentieth-century engraving in this region. The engraving to the lid is later as well.
