The early work of the French painter, sculptor, graphic artist, ceramist and film director Fernand Léger is classified as cubism. From the 1920s onwards he increasingly integrated figurative elements into his paintings. Léger's late work had an influence on American pop art painters, such as Roy Lichtenstein. After his military service in 1902–1903, the trained architectural draftsman took courses at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the Académie Julian in Paris. After Impressionist beginnings, he joined the Puteaux group in the Cubist environment; Of the Cubists, he was particularly influenced by Picasso and Georges Braque. Leger mainly exhibited in the Kahnweiler Gallery. In 1908 he opened a studio in the Paris artist colony “La Ruche” with Henri Laurens, Marc Chagall and Guillaume Apollinaire. After he was wounded in the World War, his “période mécanique” began. In 1922, Leger was one of the authors of the international magazine “Gegenstand” designed by El Lissitzky and Ilja Ehrenburg. In 1937, six of Leger's paintings were confiscated in the “Degenerate Art” campaign. In addition to numerous paintings, he primarily created monumental art, e.g. B. for the UN building in New York. According to Niklas Maak, Léger admitted in his old age that he had painted “twenty-five false Corots” in order to earn money. Some of his works were shown posthumously at documenta 1 (1955), documenta II (1959) and documenta III 1964 in Kassel.
