- Lot Description
George III Sterling Silver Footed Entree or Vegetable Dish, John Roberts & Co (1812).
A substantial sterling silver entree dish by John Roberts & Co., Sheffield, England, assayed in 1812. The dish features a footed base with four lion's paw feet, two ornate reeded handles with shell motifs, and gadrooned borders. The lid is surmounted by a decorative handle with a shell motif and both the lid and the base feature a central cartouche engraved with a family crest depicting a standing crowned lion over a banner inscribed with the Latin motto "SPES DURAT AVORUM" (The hope of our ancestors endures). The dish insert is missing, which is not unusual for antique serving pieces of this type.

- Approximately 9 3/4" H x 15" W x 9 1/2" D
- 94.9 troy ounces
The base is marked on the underside with:
- I R & CO: Maker's mark for John Roberts & Co., Sheffield, England. Maker's mark registered 1805.
- Lion Passant: Standard English hallmark indicating sterling silver (.925 purity).
- Duty Mark: King George III (mark used 1786 - 1821)
- Crown: City mark for Sheffield, England (1773 - 1975).
- "D": Date letter for assayed in 1812.
The lid is marked on the top side near the edge with:
- I R & CO: Maker's mark for John Roberts & Co., Sheffield, England. Maker's mark registered 1805.
- Lion Passant: Standard English hallmark indicating sterling silver (.925 purity).
- Duty Mark: King George III (mark used 1786 - 1821)
- Crown: City mark for Sheffield, England (1773 - 1975).
- "D": Date letter for assayed in 1812.
The base of the lid handle is marked on the top with:

Condition
Very good condition with wear, tarnish, and minor pitting commensurate with age. No dents, cracks, or repairs noted. The dish insert is missing.

Payment must be received no later than five (5) days after the sale.
If paying with a credit card, a 3% credit card processing fee will be applied to the final sales price (i.e. hammer price + buyer's premium + applicable taxes). If you have a credit card on file, any winning bids will be automatically charged (up to $3000) along with applicable fees 72 hours after you receive your invoice unless other arrangements have been made.
