Signed, 2 volumes. Includes personal letter to Windsor P. Booth.
Madame Kai-shek, maiden name Soong Mei-ling, is among the most influential women of the 20th century. As first lady to the Republic of China with husband Chiang Kai-shek, she rallied tirelessly during WWII to support the country against Japanese invasion, and was a warmly liked cultural figure in the United States, being a fluent English speaker and skilled orator. Following her husband's disposition to presiding over Taiwan, she continued to be a world traveler, frequent public figure, and skilled artisan. Her like spanned three centuries, including her final exhibition of work in New York City in 2009 at the age of 103.This extraordinary collection was published by Shih-ling Studio, 27 Changsha Street, 1 Section, Taipei, Taiwan, and printed by Benrido Co. Ltd, Kyoto, Japan. Outside covers are cloth bound, and inside bound leaves (which are removable from cover) are of heavy artisanal rice paper, bound in thick braided silk cord. Madame Kai-shek's art itself- reproductions of her black on white ink brush work in the style of Shih T'ao- is contained in 2 volumes- Volume 1 numbers 32 prints in total, with a foreword in Chinese and English by her husband, an index of contents, and a signed dedication below the fly leaf to the recipients, Mr. and Mrs. Booth. Volume 2, dated 5 years later in publication (1961) likewise contains 32 prints, a foreword by Chaing Kai-Shek, and several asides. It is unsigned. Both volumes show a small volume of light foxing on some pages, and minor edge darkening, overall VG condition. Both volumes' outer removable sleeves, with bone toggles, are in Fair-Poor condition, with damage to sleeve-spine in Volume 1, and water staining/complete binding separation to sleeve-spine in Volume 2, however both removable volumes of art remain strongly and finely bound, with no shake-out or edge breaks. Booth, an illustrious figure in his own right, was a war correspondent in WWII, part of Harry Truman's press corp, and eventually president of the National Press Club and chief of news for National Geographic. The included letter, dated March 21st, 1966 is typed and hand signed by Madame Kai-shek, and includes a fond aside which offers the volumes as a personal gift of her artwork. An extremely rare example of Chinese art with unique provenance.
