[STUDENT LIFE, EARLY 20TH CENTURY.] A scrapbook belonging to EDWARD NORTHROP CHAPMAN (1895-1978) recording his time at Dr. Holbrook's Military and Boarding School in Ossining, New York (active 1864-1915), with material from 1912 to 1913. Edward N. was the son of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), and Isabel Northrop Chapman (1894-1920), and a descendent of original settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1917. The scrapbook has the school armorial stamped on the cover, and is comprised of approx. 15 leaves of entries and material, including a Woodrow Wilson secretarial letter/envelope addressed to his father Edward M. Chapman (see below), and approx. 93 glued in photographs. Most of the photographs have written captions and show a dorm room and exteriors of the school, including photos of Mrs. Harry Holbrook and Carol Holbrook; many schoolmates on the school grounds, on ferries, at a train station, in New York City and elsewhere; running and other sports competitions, picnics, etc.; and one photo of Sing Sing Prison. There are three pages of classmate signatures, and approx. 50+ ephemera items, including school events, dinners, and sports programs; local theater flyers/programs and ticket stubs; school-related newspaper clippings; several notices of Yale University exams passed and not passed; and invitations and dance cards. 12 1/2in. x 17in. Single-sheet TLS to Edward M. Chapman, from Secretary to the President, Joseph Patrick Tumulty (1879-1954), White House letterhead and envelope. The stamped/franked envelope is addressed to Edward M. Chapman's London bank/contact, Brown, Shipley & Co., and forwarded to Lyme. The letter concerns Edward M.'s Lyme, Connecticut Postmaster lobbying effort on behalf of Clarence Clark. 9 1/4in. x 5 5/8in. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman had a personal acquaintance with Woodrow Wilson, both before and during his U.S. presidency, through the church and time spent in Lyme, Connecticut. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers/ephemera.
