Group of 6 letters to Chapman from his second wife, early 1920s, concerning local and family news, including his daughter Lucia, who he is visiting while she is sick in a New York hospital. Sheets folded to 6 7/8in. x 6in. Condition: toning; holes punched. 4. JOSEPH STEINBRINK INSURANCE AND REAL ESTATE. Payout receipt of stock shares, to Chapman, 1924. 7in. x 8 1/4in. Two of Chapman's well-used volumes: The Oxford Book of English Verse, Clarendon Press, 1901, with his name inscribed; and The Pilgrims Progress, Sever and Francis, 1864, with a few marks in his hand. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635). He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman€™s works integrated his wide-ranging theological, literary, and historical interests. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family, including first wife Isabel Northrop Chapman (1864-1920), and second wife, Louise Wadsworth Chapman (1873-1959).
