Together with a typed carbon copy of a letter from Chapman to Atkins. ATKINS: 1. Single-sheet TLS, First Congregational Church, Detroit, letterhead, July 22, 1924. He begins by complimenting Chapman's hand and tells him of a moral and spiritual handwriting expert who has analyzed his soul, and that "...he gave me the benefit of the doubt in debatable matters." He replies to Chapman's invitation to stay with a rundown of his busy schedule, etc. 11in. x 8 1/2in. Condition: Two vertical and one horizontal fold, hole punches, light toning/spotting. 2. Single-sheet ALS, First Congregational Church, Detroit, letterhead, October 12, 1925. Various personal/social plans and news, and he writes of his 58th birthday, etc.; 6 3/4in. x 10 1/2in., folded. Condition: Vertical fold, hole punches, light spotting. 3. Two-sheet ALS, First Congregational Church, Detroit, letterhead, March 20, 1926. In discussing travel/free time, he writes that "I would go to New York and spend six weeks a year of the theater, music & pictures..." He gives news of going to Palestine and Egypt and writes of "The really challenging aspect of our church work here..., " etc. 7 1/4in. x 6 1/8in. Three-sheet holographic letter (appears to be missing the last/signed page), First Congregational Church, Detroit, letterhead, July 10, 1926. Discusses Chapman's family; preparing for his trip to the Highbury Congregational Church, England; and other news. 7 1/4in. x 6 1/8in. Condition: One horizontal fold, light spotting. 5. Single-sheet ALS, on Huntington House, Seminary Campus, Auburn letterhead, September 12, 1927. Addressed to both Chapman and his wife, he writes that he has spent a day visiting around and went to the Zoo, shares news of family/friends, and his time at home. 5 3/8in. x 7 1/8in. Condition: Two vertical folds. CHAPMAN: 6. Single-sheet typed carbon copy of a letter to Atkins, July 4, 1927. An invitation for him and his wife to visit; he asks, "Did you ever preach on 'God's Surprises'?" and says "I put three stets together yesterday and tried it," etc. 11in. x 8 1/2in. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635). He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman€™s works integrated his wide-ranging theological, literary, and historical interests.
