CLEMENS, SAMUEL. Mark Twain's Sketches, New and Old. Hartford and Chicago: The American Publishing Company, 1875. First complete edition. 4to. Brown leather (very worn morocco?) over boards, pink end leaves. The front end leaf is inscribed: "To Charlie from Bray, Christmas 1875." Condition: Poor-Fair; the leather is extremely worn and boards are completely detached; leather missing from spine, exposing glued sections; pages good/clean. Speculatively, based on association and date, "Charlie" is either Charles Hartwell or his son Charles Stearns Hartwell, and "Bray" is possibly Captain Bray of the ship Morning Star, Micronesia Mission. Charles Hartwell and Captain Bray were both members of the foreign mission, and they are listed in a publication of foreign mission reports/meetings: The Missionary Herald, in American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions with a View of Other Benevolent Operations for 1879, Vol. LXXV, Cambridge, Riverside Press (pp. 216; 413) (See: archive.org "The Missionary Herald").
