- Lot Description
A WW2 U.S. War Bond Poster, titled "Fire Away! Buy Extra Bonds", created for the 5th War Loan campaign in 1944. The poster depicts U.S. Navy sailors on board the USS Dorado, with a searchlight illuminating the words "Fire Away!". The Victory "V" emblem and 5th War Loan graphic are displayed at the bottom left. The piece retains its brilliant, original colors and is professionally framed.
Designed by renowned artist Georges Schreiber (1904-1977), this poster was created in memory of the USS Dorado (SS-248), a Gato-class submarine that was tragically sunk off the coast of Cuba in 1943. Schreiber had sailed aboard the vessel in the summer of 1943, giving him a personal connection to the artwork. The USS Dorado was lost due to a German U-boat minefield, making this poster a powerful tribute to the men who served aboard her. This poster also has U.S. Government Printing Office: 1944-0-581636 printed at the bottom center. A highly collectible and fascinating piece of WW2 propaganda artwork.
