- Lot Description
This Revolutionary War-era U.S. Infantry Officer’s Spadroon Sword, dating from approximately 1780-1800, is a fine example of early military standardization. The sword features a distinctive brass hilt with the iconic 5-ball decoration, a beaded knuckle guard, and a heavy-spined blade stamped with a rare "C" marking. While the blade remains strong and intact, it exhibits some rust and pitting from age and cleaning.
Introduced in the 1780s, the 5-ball Spadroon was one of the first attempts at a standardized infantry officer’s sword, initially adopted by the British before gaining popularity among American and French officers. The French, referring to it as the épée anglaise ("English sword"), used it extensively during the French Revolutionary Wars, highlighting its widespread influence and effectiveness in battle.
Widely carried by American, British, and French officers, this spadroon holds significant historical importance, having been used in key military campaigns of the late 18th century. A rare and highly collectible piece, this sword is an exceptional find for serious enthusiasts of Revolutionary War and Napoleonic-era militaria.
