- Lot Description
This U.S. Army M1917A1 Helmet, commonly known as the "Kelly helmet", was produced after World War I using surplus M1917 Brodie helmet shells. The front face has an unknown emblem of a worn white and blue star, we were unable to find exact provenance. This M1917A1 helmet retains a partial liner and fabric chinstrap, this piece reflects the evolution of American military headgear between the world wars.
Developed as an improvement to the original M1917, the M1917A1 became the standard-issue helmet for U.S. forces throughout the 1920s and into World War II. It features a sturdier liner system and a fabric chinstrap, distinguishing it from its WWI predecessor, which utilized a leather chinstrap.
The Kelly helmet was widely used in early WWII training and by some frontline troops before the adoption of the M1 helmet. Its shrapnel-deflecting design carried forward key elements of the original Brodie concept, making it one of the last looking models of this helmet before new designs took over. A fantastic piece of military history and a fine addition to any collection.

As the auction house, we handle the packing, shipping, and handling of your purchased items with care. However, we are not global import experts and as such, buyers must be aware of and comply with their country's import regulations, restrictions, and legal requirements regarding the items they purchase.
It is the buyer’s responsibility to verify import laws and restrictions for their country before placing a bid or purchasing an item, cover any customs fees, VAT, or additional import duties required by their government, and ensure the item is legally permissible for import into their country.
