- Lot Description
This Roman Provincial BI Tetradrachm was minted between AD 251-253 during the reign of Emperor Trebonianus Gallus. Minted in Antioch, this silver coin is graded AU (About Uncirculated), indicating minimal wear and well-preserved details. It features the emperor’s portrait on the obverse, while the reverse seemingly depicts a griffin - a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.
Trebonianus Gallus came to power in 251 AD following the death of Emperor Decius and his son at the Battle of Abritus, a major defeat against the Goths. His rule was marked by ongoing military strife, including Gothic invasions and internal unrest, as well as a devastating plague that swept through the empire. To secure stability, he made peace with the Goths and elevated his son, Volusianus, as co-emperor. However, his perceived failures led to his downfall, and he was ultimately overthrown and killed by his own troops in 253 AD.
The coin reflects the turbulent nature of the mid-3rd century, a period of crisis for the Roman Empire. Provincial tetradrachms like this were primarily circulated in the eastern provinces, serving as key instruments of regional trade and imperial propaganda.
