- Lot Description
A rare one-of-a-kind pair of ancient Roman Bronze Greaves, dating from the late 1st to early 3rd century AD, used by soldiers and gladiators for leg protection in combat. These finely crafted guards originate from the Provincia Moesia Superior & Pannonia, a key military region in the Balkans. Their deep green patina reflects centuries of burial, and they have been professionally cleaned and conserved with museum wax.
Provenance: Excavated from a Roman Villa Rustica near Sirmium in present-day Serbia, a city that became one of four capitals of the Roman Empire in 294 AD. The buyer went through rigorous government approval before legally exporting this item to the US. Originally inhabited by Illyrians and Celts, Sirmium was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BC and later became the capital of Pannonia Inferior. A major military and administrative center, it was home to soldiers and veterans, making it highly likely these greaves belonged to a retired legionary who settled there. Sirmium remains an archaeological site of exceptional importance, offering rare insights into Roman military life. Truly this piece belongs in a museum!
