- Lot Description
A rare Polish or Russian Czekan War Hammer from the 16th-17th century, featuring extensive chiseled decorations on the hammerhead and spike. Despite its very ornate design, this war hammer remains a highly battle-worthy artifact. Measuring 27 inches in length with a 9-inch blade, this weapon was both an effective battlefield tool and a status symbol among Eastern European cavalry and nobility.
The Czekan, a form of War Hammer or Battle Axe, was widely used in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. It combined armor-piercing capability with intricate ornamentation, often carried by hussars and elite warriors. Many examples featured decorated heads with floral or geometric engravings, indicating ownership by high-ranking individuals.
The wooden handle and brass rivets may have been replaced during the Victorian era, a common practice for preserving historical weapons.
