A European Composite Rapier, Type #61, with a hilt classified under Norman topology, was used for a brief 40-year period. This rapier is constructed with an oval-shaped pommel, a pair of horizontal quillon guards expanding progressively toward the outer tips, a stiff diamond-section blade tapering to a point, and a rectangular ricasso having a maker's mark.
This first illustration of this Rapier appears in Rubens’ 1610 equestrian portrait of Archduke Albrecht and Simon Vouet’s 1615 "Le Spadassin".
Identical examples exist in Museo di Arte Applicate (Milan), the Wallace Collection (London, No. A606), and the Musée de l’Armée (Paris, Cat. No. J192), reinforcing its historical significance.

The weapon of choice was the rapier from the middle of the 16th to the end of the 17th century. The rapier is a simple but highly effective sword against the non-armored. The rapier was primarily a thrusting weapon that could inflict serious injury to an adversary‚ vital organs with minimal effort.
Provenance: A world-renowned US Armor and Weapons Dealer with impeccable provenance. Acquired from a private 80-year collection that started after WWII. Acquired from the 65-year-old granddaughter.
