- Lot Description
A rare and elegant 18th-century French Officer’s Trefoil Rapier from the American Revolutionary War period. The rapier features a trefoil-shaped unmarked blade, a pierced guard in front of the crossguard, and a raised grip handle designed for improved hold and control. One of its most remarkable features is the complete original decorative chain hand guard, an element rarely seen intact on surviving examples.
Included with the rapier is an original leather scabbard, which, while in poor condition, retains significant historical value. The lower portion and scabbard tip are missing, but the scabbard still features a rare and worn belt hanger, a component typically lost over time due to its fragile material. Measuring approximately 37.75 inches in overall length, this sword reflects the distinctive French influence on American officers’ weaponry.
French-made rapiers were highly sought after by American officers during the Revolution due to their balance, durability, and ornate design. This particular piece stands as both a functional weapon and a work of art, making it a must have for any collection of Revolutionary War militaria.
