This lot combines a Spanish Cabasset Helmet marked c.1550, and an early 17th century with a 19th-century French Porcelain Plaque Painting depicting armed musketeers of the same period.
The cabasset helmet is a fine example of period armor, constructed from a single piece of steel with rivets above the narrow brim for securing the internal lining band. This particular example still retains its original band and an attached woven liner. Cabasset helmets were commonly worn by foot soldiers and have been found in early American colonial settlements such as Jamestown and Popham (c. 1607), highlighting their widespread use among European forces.
Complementing the helmet is an exquisite 19th-century French porcelain plaque painting, signed by H. Deprez, depicting three Spanish or Italian musketeers standing by a city wall, armed with wheellock muskets and powder flasks. One of the musketeers wears a morion helmet, similar in design to the cabasset, reinforcing the historical connection between the two pieces. The detailed artistry and vibrant colors of the painting beautifully capture the martial attire and weaponry of the time, making it a compelling addition to any collection.
This pairing presents a unique opportunity to acquire both an authentic piece of 16th-century military equipment and a fine artistic representation of the era, making it a perfect display set for collectors of European military history and antique arms and armor.
