- Lot Description
26th-24th century BC. A chert cylinder seal with a group of figures consisting of a naked hero in the centre, with curled hair, grasping a wild goat and a red-deer, each of which is being attacked by a lion; both lions seized by the tail by the hands of two other naked heros, between both naked heroes, a capride leaning against the one on the left. For similar figures on cylinder seals of this period cf. von der Osten, H. H. AOSCB (OIP 37), Chicago 1936, pl.III, fig.22; also: Wiseman, D. J. WASCS I (Uruk-ED III), London, 1962, pl.16, fig.g-i; Porada, E. CANES I, Washington, 1948, pl.XI, fig.65; and Borowski, E. CCO I, Ascona, 1947, pl.V, fig.23. 3.6 grams, 17mm (1/2"). Property of a North London gentleman; previously in a London collection since before 1999.Very fine condition.
