- Lot Description
"Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, The Astronomer Poet of Persia", Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald with Accompaniment of Drawings by Elihu Vedder. Houghton and Mifflin, Boston, 1884. Edition limited to 100 copies, printed on Japan paper, of which this is No 57, signed and numbered by Vedder. Elephant folio, in the original tooled and gilt padded leather binding, having silk covered pastedowns and endpapers. Every page of text is a full illustration with calligraphy by Vedder, originally written in Persian, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048–1131). 55 plates including the title, followed by 15 pp of text with illustration, notes. The prints are tipped to heavy stock pages with all gilt edges. 18" x 15" x 2". Contents near fine, damage to binding and silk linings.
