Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1st Baronet, was Court Painter to English and British monarchs from James II (1685) to George I. He did a well known portrait of Isaac Newton. Born in Germany, he studied under Bol, a student of Rembrandt, then in Italy before settling in England. The death of Lely in 1680 opened the way for Kneller to become Court Painter.
