Ward, Samuel (1725-1776); Governor of Colony of Rhode Island & Providence Plantation, State Supreme Court Justice, Representative to the Continental Congress in 1774, Ward was the only Colonial Governor to not enforce the Stamp Act, died of smallpox three weeks before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, an appointment of Joseph Howland as Lieutenant of the Fourth Company of Militia, from Newport, boldly signed 'Sam. Ward' and witnessed by his son and secretary Henry Ward, on 18th June, 1762, on 7 1/2" x 12 1/4" wove paper, in black stick frame, matted and glazed, OS: 12 3/4" x 16 3/4". Folded, torn top center, losses to edges, especially lower corners.
