Dated 1731 Ornate Forged Iron Strong Box, from Nuremberg, Germany, having complicated applied cast leaf and scroll, cherub and portrait head decoration, massive lift handles, riveted edge banding, retaining the original hasps and bales, center top lock having old key and a 'watchdog' pivoting cover, the full underside of the lid covered with the locking mechanism, the iron plate cover of which is painted with royal portraits surrounded by posies on a crimson field, most likely King of Bohemia (and later Holy Roman Emperor) Charles VII with his wife Maria Amalia, Archduchess of Austria. Some locking pieces missing, lock inoperable. 18- 1/2" x 32" x 20". Remarkable condition.
