Elderly Couple Pleading for Their Lives, in front of a Court of the Inquisition, the charges against them being read out from above the seated Cardinal of the Church, who is dressed all in black except for the obligatory red shoes. He is flanked by fawning members of the court, foppishly dressed in Spanish influenced costume. A guard is bracing his halberd against the crowd, who want to see what is to be done with the hot iron in a brazier behind the two victims, the rustic plank torture wall in the background, their gibbet waiting outside. Strangely, a Damocles-like sword hangs over the proceedings, along with an odd symbol of three diamonds hung from a single larger diamond in metal. Circa 17th c. Label verso from the E.B.
