Possibly by AMMI PHILLIPS (NY/CT, 1788-1865). A Prosperous Family of Five, oil on canvas, circa 1820s, unsigned, probably New England, depicting a Father at center holding a rose, flanked by two young daughters, one with a robin on her finger, the other with a toy pull cart. Mother is on left wearing the most recent high fashion headdress; the Mother-in-Law is on the right, doing needlework. All are looking directly at the viewer, with very detailed costume, swag drapes above as if in a box at the theatre, with a bird perched on the front rail, looking up at the Father. Accompanied by a letter from Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser (former curator of the Wadsworth Atheneum; currently Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY). Ms. Kornhauser calls this painting a "wonderful group portrait, of exceptional quality." In this letter she asked if the painting might be available for sale to the museum. In later flat plank frame, OS: 51" x 83- 3/4", SS: 43- 1/4" x 75- 1/2". Cleaned and relined, light rub upper left, many areas of inpainting.
