Monumental Commemorative Bronze Plaque "William Phipps Blake, Geologist & William Phipps Blake II, MCMIX (1909), signed lower right, 30" x 34 1/2" x 3". Scuffs. William Phipps Blake (1826-1910), geologist, mining consultant, and educator, helped route the railroad from the Mississipi to the Pacific, was involved in places like Tombstone and Bisbee, Arizona, Eureka and Virginia City, Nevada and Leadville, Colorado. His work for the Government and scientific presses and teaching at University of California influenced generations of mining engineers. His grandson died at age 16 in 1919, New Rochelle, NY. Lawrie provided much of the scuptural decoration for Rockefeller Center, including the massive glass "Wisdom" in the entry hall.
