Portrait of George Washington, circa 1850, after the 'Lansdowne' portrait, now hanging in the White House. Oil on panel, unsigned, in the original gilt frame. Tag verso from the California Palace of the Arts in San Francisco, loaned by the John Levy Galleries, 11 E. 57th St., New York. Jane was the youngest daughter of Gilbert Stuart, and in spite of having talent when young, was consigned to painting backgrounds for her father. After his death, she struggled along copying his more famous portraits, but lost his sketches and notes when the studio burned in 1850. She died destitute in a house provided by friends of the family. OS: 31" x 23", SS: 26" x 18". Cleaned and restored.
