Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver, .36 cal, 6 round, having the cylinder engraved with a scene of the victory of the Second Texas Navy at the Battle of Campeche on May 16, 1843. All parts marked with s/n 86760 (1854 year of mfg). The octagonal barrel is stamped "Address Saml Colt Hartford CT". 13" long overall, 7 1/2" barrel. Normal wear to the original walnut grips, very light corrosion.
Carried as a belt pistol by Sgt. James Swanson in the 146th Regt, NY Vols, "Garrard's Tigers", Zouave infantry, age, 25 years. Enlisted, August 29, 1862, at Camden, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. E, October 10, 1862; Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, promoted sergeant, September 14, 1863; returned to ranks, February 22, 1864; killed in action, May 5,1864, in the first day of the Battle of the Wilderness, where 146th Zouaves suffered a 20% casualty rate, the highest infantry rate of the war.
